Westlake Village Aikido

We teach traditional Iwama style Aikido. Powell Sensei and Rodgers Sensei are fourth generation in lineage. Powell Sensei teaches our Wednesday - Friday adult classes and the Saturday kids class. Rodgers Sensei teaches our Monday adult class.

Aikido is a traditional and dynamic martial art. Through the rigorous training of powerful self-defense techniques that can be used against a wide variety of attacks, Aikido promotes the development of strong character, total fitness and reduction of stress in a harmonious training environment.

Aikido is fundamentally different from other martial arts in that there is no toe-to-toe battling for power. Aikido exploits an opponent's strengths and weaknesses by merging into his movement and then taking control. As Aikido does not rely on size or strength, it is a martial art that can be effectively utilized by anyone.

The focus at Westlake Village Aikido is providing the same quality of instruction as is taught in Japan. All techniques and teaching methods at Westlake Village Aikido are the same as what was taught to the chief instructor, David Alexander, over thirty years ago at the Founder’s dojo in Iwama, Japan.

School Founder

David Alexander Sensei (retired) is a licensed rokudan (sixth degree black belt) with over 30 years of international experience in Aikido, including 10 years of training at the Founder's school in Iwama, Japan under the personal direction of Morihiro Saito Sensei. Alexander Sensei is also an M.I.T. graduate with a degree in engineering.

Bokken and Jo are taught periodically throughout the month.
